Former SGS Head of Science E.J.Chambers dies aged 95

"Ted" Chambers as we all knew him.

Edward Jack Chambers, known as "Ted" by the staff and "Zom" by his pupils, was born in Birmingham. After attending local schools he went on to Birmingham University. After graduation his first teaching appointment was in London. On the outbreak of war EJC applied for bomb disposal duties but being a physics teacher he was drafted into the Royal Air Force as a ground instructor. After the war he successfully applied for the post of Science master at Swanage Grammar School and he and his wife Peggy, whom he had married in Scarborough, moved to Swanage in 1946. After living in temporary accommodation in Burlington Road the family settled in Bay Crescent.

Mr. Chambers taught Physics and General Science throughout his 26 years at Swanage Grammar School. After teaching in far from ideal conditions during his early years at the school the opening of the school's new science labs in 1957 opened up a new era for him.

In addition to his normal teaching duties EJC instigated the Astronomy Club, gave many interesting and memorable talks on a variety of subjects at Society meetings and took great interest in operatic and other musical activities of the school.

Outside school in addition to writing three text books EJC also wrote a hobbies book. During his long years of retirement EJC indulged in his love of instrumental music and opera; though he was not keen on jazz. He also shared his wife's interest in painting and particularly enjoyed sketching.

"Ted" Chambers died peacefully in Swanage on August 7, 2002.
