Reunion June 26th. 1999

A very enjoyable and well attended reunion took place at the old Grammar School (now the Purbeck Centre) on June 26th. 1999. This was a very special occasion since it was 70 years since our school opened and 25 years since it was closed. The day commenced at 10.30 a.m. with registration and coffee and a short service of thanksgiving and remembrance took place at midday conducted by the Revd Ann Butters (1953). This was followed by a delicious lunch in the marquee on the school field.

At about 2.15 p.m. there was a Business Meeting for all SGSA members (details can be obtained from the Chairman or Secretary). Afterwards, three former members of the staff and Patrons of the Association, Miss Marjorie Scott, Mr. Frank (Lofty) Stretton and Miss Gwen Rawlings ceremonially cut a special Anniversary cake and later in the day all people present were given a slice.

It was approximately 4 p.m. when the photographer arrived and photographs were taken in groups depending on the year of intake. In the evening there was a barbeque followed by a raffle and an auction of various items of special interest to members. Throughout the day there was a bar in the marquee selling a wide variety of drinks and the old school was open for those who wished to look round and wallow in nostalgia! Also, Dick Riding had mounted an excellent display of photographs and school memorabilia.

The date of the next reunion has tentatively been set for 2004 but this depends on the availability of the old school and the grounds as Dorset County Council are selling it as the lease to Joseph Allnatt Centres Ltd. is soon to expire and so the future is at present uncertain.
